There are about 16 regions in Ghana. These regions function as sub-national administration of Ghana. These administrations are further divided into 216 local districts. In Ghana these sub administrations are called regions instead of states.

 

Before the referendum December 27, 2018 held to  create six new regions, there were 10 regions namely: Greater Accra, Ashanti, Northern, Volta, Eastern, Western, Uper-East and Upper-West, Central and Brong Ahafo. All the regions in Ghana have their uniqueness – the culture, the local dialect, the food, the local dance and the cost of living.

 

Each region in Ghana offers a unique cultural tapestry, economic activities, and natural attractions. We are known for our hospitality and vibrant culture, embrace traditional festivals, music, and dance. Agriculture is a significant occupation in most regions, while urban centers contribute to commerce, education, and administrative functions.

 

Ghana’s regional diversity allows for a rich tapestry of customs and traditions – from the bustling markets of Accra to the serene landscapes of the Northern Regions, there’s a wealth of experiences and opportunities in each of Ghana’s distinct regions to explore.

1. Ahafo Region

Capital: Goaso

The Ahafo Region, one of the newly created regions in 2019, is known for its rich cultural heritage, lush landscapes, and mineral resources. Agriculture is a key economic activity, with cocoa, cashew, and other crops cultivated here. The capital city, Goaso, is a hub of traditional customs and hosts colorful festivals like the ‘Fofie’ Yam Festival and ‘Akwasidae’. The region boasts serene natural environments, making it an emerging tourist destination.

 

2. Ashanti Region

Capital: Kumasi

The Ashanti Region, with Kumasi as its capital, is renowned for its vibrant culture and significant historical background. It’s the center of the Ashanti Kingdom, characterized by the legendary Golden Stool. The region is famous for its kente cloth, woodcarvings, mining and handicrafts. Kumasi, a bustling city, is a major trading center, with the Kejetia Market being one of the largest open-air markets in West Africa.

 

3. Bono East Region

Capital: Techiman

Techiman, the capital of the Bono East Region, is a significant commercial hub known for its agricultural productivity. These region produces a variety of crops, including yams, maize, and cocoa. The region is rich in natural resources and hosts the Buabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary, attracting tourists interested in wildlife and nature.

 

4. Brong Ahafo Region

Capital: Sunyani

The former Brong Ahafo Region, now split into Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regions, is known for its agricultural output, particularly in cocoa production. Sunyani, the capital, is a peaceful town and is a central administrative and commercial hub, surrounded by picturesque landscapes and historical sites to tour.

5. Central Region

Capital: Cape Coast

The Central Region, with Cape Coast as its capital, is steeped in history due to its role in the transatlantic slave trade. It’s home to Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The region also boasts beautiful beaches, such as the Ada Foah and Brenu Beaches, making it a hub for tourism and fishing. Most African American who visits Ghana to learn about barbaric slave trade also visit Central region to tour the historic slave castles.

 

6. Eastern Region

Capital: Koforidua

 

The Eastern Region is known for its diverse landscapes, including mountains, forests, and rivers. Koforidua, the capital, is a bustling town with an active market scene. The region is famous for beadmaking, and the Boti Falls and Umbrella Rock are popular tourist attractions. You can’t mention eastern region without mentioning the Aburi garden – a scenic tourist attraction site with variety of rare trees.

 

7. Greater Accra Region

Capital: Accra

 

Accra, as you may already know is the capital city and a major urban center, is the heartbeat of Ghana’s economy and administrative activities. The Greater Accra Region houses key government institutions, embassies, multinational companies and significant landmarks like the Independence Arch and Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum. It’s a melting pot of cultures, commerce, and a vibrant nightlife.

8. North East Region

Capital: Nalerigu

 

The North East Region is known for its agricultural activities, with communities engaged in primarily in farming and animal husbandry. Nalerigu, the capital, is a town promoting traditional values and local craftsmanship. The region’s landscapes offer great potential for eco-tourism.

 

9. Northern Region

Capital: Tamale

 

Once known as the fastest growing city in West Africa, Tamale, the capital of the Northern Region, is a bustling city with a thriving market and cultural diversity. The region is known for its traditional mud-built homes in the suburbs, vibrant local markets, and the unique lifestyle. Agriculture is a significant part of the region’s economy.

10. Oti Region

Capital: Dambai

 

The Oti Region is a relatively one of the new region in Ghana, formed in 2019. Dambai, the capital city, is located along the Volta River and is known for its fishing activities. The region is rich in agricultural potential, particularly in the production of cassava and other root  crops and tubers like yams.

 

11. Savannah Region

Capital: Damongo

 

Damongo, the capital of the Savannah Region, is a town surrounded by savannah grasslands. The region is characterized by its rural setting, with farming and animal husbandry as primary economic activities. It boasts diverse wildlife and natural reserves, making it a potential ecotourism destination.

 

12. Upper East Region

Capital: Bolgatanga

 

Bolgatanga, the capital of the Upper East Region, is known for its distinctive architectural styles, including the famous round huts. The region has a unique culture, with annual events like the Sandema Festival and the Feok Festival, showcasing traditional music, dance, and food. The landscape is characterized by rocky outcrops, savannah, and the unique Tongo Hills.

 

13. Upper West Region

Capital: Wa

 

The Upper West Region is marked by its distinctive Sahelian landscapes and indigenous traditions. Wa, the capital city, boasts stunning rock formations and ancient mosques, reflecting the region’s history and culture. Agriculture, particularly shea nut production, is a vital economic activity for the locals.

 

14. Western Region

Capital: Sekondi-Takoradi

 

The Western Region is known for its significant role in Ghana’s mining industry, particularly in gold and bauxite. Sekondi-Takoradi, the twin city capital, is a major port, oil and industrial hub. The region is rich in natural resources and hosts picturesque beaches and the Nzulezo stilt village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

15. Western North Region

Capital: Sefwi Wiawso

 

Sefwi Wiawso, the capital city of the Western North Region, is known for its agricultural activities, including cocoa and oil palm plantations. The region offers diverse landscapes, with the Bia National Park attracting nature enthusiasts.

 

16. Volta Region

Capital: Ho

 

The Volta Region is renowned for its scenic beauty, with the Volta Lake, Wli Waterfalls, and Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary being major attractions. Ho, the capital city, is a lively town known for its hilly terrain and the Ewe cultural heritage. Fishing, agriculture, and eco-tourism are vital to the region’s economy.
