Like any other city, there are desirable areas and less desirable neighbourhood to live.  Accra is not an exception. Whether you are renter looking to rent a place or potential home owner looking to build or buy your next dream home, these areas pose concern which you should be aware of to make an informed decision. These concerns include:

1.       Flooding during rainy season

2.       Availabilty of social amenities

3.       Crime rate and safety concerns

4.       Availability and quality of housing

5.       Cost of living, including rent

7.       Environmental factors such as air and noise pollution

8.       Traffic congestion 

9.       Well planned community inclding green spaces

10.   Cultural and social factors

11.   Infrastructure and public services

13.   Ghetto or hood lifesyle.

I’m going to discuss each neighbourhoods cons that makes it less appealing for living. That said, what I consider a disadvantage in this article for one person, it may be another people’s cup of tea. It is a matter of personal preference.

Nima:

 Nima is a neighborhood in Accra that has a reputation for being unsafe and less desirable to live in. It is known as “Zongo community” in Ghanaian setting and very notorious for its high crime rate, overcrowding, and poor sanitation. The area is also prone to flooding during the rainy season, which exacerbates the poor living conditions. It is predominantly a Muslim community and is home to a large number of migrants from northern Ghana and neighboring countries.

 

Agbobloshie:

Agbobloshie is another area in Accra that is often perceived to be a slum and  less desirable to live in. This neighborhood is known for its e-waste dumpsite, which poses a significant health hazard to residents and the environment. Agbobloshie is also notorious for its high crime rate, which includes theft and drug-related offenses.

 

Chorkor:

Chorkor is a densely populated neighborhood in Accra that is known for its poor sanitation, overcrowding, and high incidence of waterborne diseases. The area is situated along the coast and is home to a large fishing community. Chorkor has also been known to experience occasional incidents of crime.

 

Ashaiman:

 Ashaiman is a suburb of Accra that is located in the Tema Metropolitan Area. The area is known for its high crime rate, poor infrastructure, and limited access to basic services. Ashaiman has a large informal settlement where many residents live in substandard housing conditions. The are criminal boys called “Kwashey boys” who will rob you at gun point on a broad day light.

 

Jamestown and Bukom:

Jamestown is a historic neighborhood in Accra that has been home to the Ga people for centuries. However, the area has a high poverty rate, poor living conditions, and inadequate sanitation facilities. The area is also prone to flooding during the rainy season. Despite the challenges, Jamestown remains a popular tourist destination because of its historic landmarks and cultural heritage. Bukom is a nearby slum community, with the same poor standard of living, high crime and characterize with boxing as the only way to keep the youth busy.

 

Korle Gonno:

Korle Gonno is a neighborhood in Accra that is known for its high crime rate and poor living conditions. The area has a large informal settlement where many residents live in substandard housing conditions. The neighborhood is situated near the Korle Lagoon, which is heavily polluted, contributing to the poor environmental conditions.

 

Dansoman:

Dansoman is a suburban neighborhood in Accra that has experienced rapid urbanization in recent years. While not as notorious as some of the other areas on this list, Dansoman has been known to have occasional incidents of crime and poor sanitation. The area has limited access to basic services such as water and electricity.

 

Teshie:

Teshie is another suburb of Accra that is known for its poor infrastructure, limited access to basic services, and high incidence of waterborne diseases. The area has a large informal settlement where many residents live in substandard housing conditions. The jobless youth are on the streets trying to snatch any purse. It is all about survivla.

 

Nungua:

Nungua is a neighborhood in Accra that is situated along the coast. It is also known for its poor sanitation, limited access to basic services, and occasional incidents of crime. The area is home to a large fishing community and has experienced rapid urbanization in recent years.

 

Circle:

Dr. Kwame Nkrumah Circle

 

This neighbourhood named after our first president Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is a busy business center also busy area for crime. There are street gangs and criminal looking for their next prey – from mugging to robbing you especially personal electric items like mobile phones. You don’t want to fall a victim. Scammers are also on the street trying to sell you something and take much from you then you buy from them. Most of what they sell are counterfeit items.

 

What communities in Accra are flood Prone?

The following flood prone locations makes it less desirable to live during rainy seasons in Accra:

  1. Tse Addo
  2. Weija
  3. Adabraka
  4. Amasaman 
  5. Pokuasi Ofanko
  6. Kwame Nkrumah Circle
  7. Industrial area
  8. Dzorwulu
  9. Kotobabi
  10. Kaneshi
  11. Kasua
  12. Some part of East Legon
  13. Atico Bridge and Junction
  14. Abelemkpe
  15. Abolo Junction

Although some of these areas are business hubs but their flooding history makes it less appealing to live. If you are planning building or buying your dream home in one of these areas  especially Tse Addo  and Weija, you may have to give it a second thought. Believe it or not the prices of a plot of land at Tse Addo is around 500,000 GHS minimum. The same can be said at Weija. Build or buy a house in these areas at your own peril. Most people only find out they are on flood zone only when their house is submerged. You don’t want to be like those folks. One day your house will be submerged under water. No second guess. What’ll happens to your possessions? Gone with the flood.
